A Cow Hat for Milli (Crochet Pattern)

A friend of mine asked me to make a cow hat for her little girl. I have to admit, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to make it. The one she wanted to buy (but is always out of stock) is very cute and I had never attached ears to a hat before but it turned out pretty cute.

Materials:
1. Yarn: pink, yellow, black, and white (I used Simply Soft yarn)
2. Buttons: three black and one white button
3. Crochet hook: size G
4. Yarn needle

Abbreviations:
rnd - round
mr - magic ring
ch - chain
yo - yarn over
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
sl st - slip stitch
strc - somewhat treble crochet
dc - double crochet
hdc 2 tog - half double crochet 2 together
approx - approximately

3. I'm pretty sure I made up one of the stitches. Below is the name I gave it and a description of how to do it.

Strc - somewhat treble crochet
yo, insert hook through loop, yo, pull hook through loop (you have 3 loops); yo and pull through 1 loop (3 left on hook); yo and pull through 2 loops (2 left on hook); yo and pull through 2 loops (1 left on hook)

Hat (in white):

mr, ch 1, hdc 8 in the ring
rnd 1: 2 hdc in each - 16
rnd 2: hdc 1, 2 hdc in next (8 times) - 24
rnd 3: hdc in 2, 2 hdc in 3rd (8 times) - 32
rnd 4: hdc in 3 sts, 2 hdc in 4th (8 times) - 40
rnd 5: hdc in 4 sts, 2 hdc in 5th (8 times) - 48
rnd 6: hdc in 5 sts, 2 hdc in 6th (8 times) - 56
rnd 7: hdc in 6 sts, 2 hdc in 7th (8 times) - 64
rnd 8: hdc in 7 sts, 2 hdc in 8th (8 times) - 72
rnd 9: hdc in 8 sts, 2 hdc in 9th (8 times) - 80

To make the hat bigger just increase more, use a bigger size hook, or thicker yarn.

rnd 10 - 23: hdc around

Flaps:

Now we'll make the flaps so don't fasten off just yet. Simply chain 1 and turn.

row 1: hdc in 12 sts; ch 1 and turn
row 2: hdc in 12 sts; ch 1 and turn
row 3: hdc 2 tog, hdc in 8 sts, hdc 2 tog; ch 1 and turn - 10 
row 4: hdc 2 tog, hdc in 6 sts, hdc 2 tog; ch 1 and turn - 8
row 5: hdc 2 tog, hdc in 4 sts, hdc 2 tog; ch 1 and turn - 6
row 6: hdc until the end

Fasten off and weave in the end.

Second flap: I folded the hat in two (the 1st flap was also folded in half) and that's how I decided where to put the second flap. Crochet the 2nd flap the same way you did the 1st one. When you're done, fasten off and weave in the ends.

Mouth:

Now that you're done with the flaps, single crochet around in pink starting in front of the hat 3 sts before the flap. When you're finished, sl st in the 1st sc you made, ch 1 and turn. Hdc until you get to 3 sts before the 2nd flap. Ch 1 and turn. We'll be making the mouth.


rows 2 - 5 (or 6): hdc until the end; ch 1 and turn
row 6 (or 7): hdc until the end

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.




Ears x 2 (in pink): 


ch 13
rnd 1: sc in 2nd st from hook, sc in 1 st, hdc in 2 sts, dc in 2 sts, strc in next 6; 

sl st down the last st (3 sl sts); strc in 6 sts, dc in 2 sts, hdc in 2 sts, sc in 2 sts, ch 1, sl st






rnd 2: sc in next 2, hdc in next 4 sts, dc in 3 sts, strc in 3 sts, sl st 6; ch 3, strc in 3 sts, dc in 3 sts, hdc in next 4 sts, sc in 2 sts. 




Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

With black yarn, sc around each ear leaving the bottom part pink (so don't sc with black yarn on the bottom of the ear). Weave in the ends.

Circle (in black):
mr, ch 1, hdc 8 in the ring
rnd 1: 2 hdc in each - 16
rnd 2: 1 hdc, 2 hdc in next (8 times) - 24
rnd 3: 1 hdc in 2 sts, 2 hdc in 3rd (8 times) - 32

Fasten off. Leave a long tail for sewing.

Bow (in yellow):
ch 8
rnd 1: sc in each until the last one; 4 sc in last st of the row; now going around sc in each until the last one; 3 sc in last one
rnd 2: sc around
rnd 3 - 15: sc around
rnd 15: sc both ends together

Fasten off. Wrap some yarn around the middle to form the bow.

Sewing:
1. Sew the mouth to the hat.
2. Sew the black circle approx 2 rows above the mouth.
3. Sew the buttons. The eyes should go approx 6 rows above the mouth. Use white button for the black circle.
4. Sew the ears. Watch tutorial if you've never sewn ears before.
5. Sew the bow approx 2-3 rows above the eye (the one without the black circle).
6. Flaps: I added pink braids. Use 12 strings of yarn for each. Insert three strings in each of the 3 middle sts of the flap and then braid them together. Make the braids as long as you want them.
